Carnegie Pavillion reaches peak

Yorkshire

Headingley Carnegie

The Carnegie Pavillion has been transformed since the early stages of work during the summer. It is due to open in June

Yorkshire today completed the five-tier structure of the Carnegie Pavillion, which is due to open in June, and named the seating at the front the Trueman Enclosure.

Club captain Anthony McGrath and promising batsman Jonathan Bairstow joined two fellow Leeds Metropolitan University students to tighten the bolt on the highest truss tip of the canopy at the top of the pavilion.

The club also fulfilled its promise to commemorate Yorkshire and England pace legend Fred Trueman, who died in July 2006. The Trueman Enclosure takes the place of the old Wintershed Lower Stand.

The £21m Carnegie Pavilion, designed by architect Will Alsop, will replace the existing media and player facilities at the Rugby Stand End.

It will also provide office space for Yorkshire staff and opportunities for matchday hospitality and events, plus operate as a university teaching facility during the academic year.

Yorkshire chief executive Stewart Regan said: “The pavilion has been rising quickly at the Kirkstall Lane End and we cannot wait to move in as it is going to be a tremendous addition to the Headingley Carnegie cricket ground.

“The facilities available to the club and Leeds Met will be first-class and quite literally cements a partnership between the two organisations that has provided successful results for many years.”

Of Trueman, Regan added: “Fred is sadly missed, the club will never forget his outstanding achievements for both Yorkshire and England and now the Trueman Enclosure is to be part of Headingley Carnegie cricket ground it will further ensure that his memory lives on.”

Veronica Trueman, Fred’s widow, said: “I am delighted that the club has taken this step to remember Fred and give him a lasting legacy.

“He would have been deeply moved and honoured to have a key part of the ground named after him.

"It is a fitting tribute and I hope it will inspire the young Yorkshire fast bowlers of the future to run down the hill from the Trueman Enclosure and take lots of wickets.”
