Vaughan fillip for Yorkshire
Anthony McGrath believes Yorkshire can only benefit from Michael Vaughan’s omission from the England team this winter.
Vaughan has not played for his country since resigning as captain last August, and was overlooked for a place in the squad for the tour of the West Indies which starts next week.
While Vaughan may be left to rue what could have been when England fly to the Caribbean, McGrath - his county captain - is relishing being able to call on the services of one of the country’s finest batsmen.
Vaughan, 34, will be included in Yorkshire's plans for pre-season, including their venture to the United Arab Emirates to defend the ProARCH Trophy.
And he will more than aware that an impressive start to the domestic campaign will keep his name in the England selectors’ thoughts ahead of the two-Test home series against West Indies and the Ashes that follows.
“He looks really well,” said McGrath. “He is looking forward to a full pre-season with us, and hopefully some runs early on will put him in the frame for the home series.
“He is in really good spirits and everyone here is hoping he can get back for the West Indies series in May, but, if not that one, then Australia.
“If he does play well, he is still one of England’s best batters. It was a tough decision whether to pick him or not for the Caribbean and you could have understood it whichever way they went.”
In the meantime, McGrath and Yorkshire coach Martyn Moxon will make use of his considerable experience at the highest level.
“For both me and Martyn he is someone to call upon, he has been captain of England for a number of years so that experience helps us out,” McGrath said.
“But the young lads can now go on a full pre-season with Michael Vaughan, be with him every day, and we feel that will be priceless for some of them.”
