Yorkshire suffer washout

Yorkshire's LV County Championship match against Sussex at Scarborough was abandoned about an hour before the scheduled start of the final day's play.

More heavy rain overnight, following yesterday's complete washout, left left large pools of standing water on the outfield.

Umpires Jeremy Lloyds and Steve Garratt made their decision after Sussex's director of cricket Mark Robinson queried whether Yorkshire would have been within their rights to declare on their 133 for seven if play had been able to start late in the day.

That would have denied the visitors the possibility of a third bowling bonus point and, with that the case, Robinson felt there was little point waiting with the prospects of play virtually nil.

"It was a hypothetical situation but had it occurred then we would have had to mention it in our report," said Garratt.

Yorkshire could not complain the loss of the last two days of the match had cost them chance of a victory because they were already in a difficult position, 132 runs behind.

It was the fourth completely blank championship day of the season for Yorkshire and time is running out for them to save themselves from relegation.

They are without a championship match next week but then return to Scarborough for their final home game against Somerset before wrapping up the season by taking on Sussex again at Hove.
