Derbyshire have continued their winter recruitment drive with the signing of Tim Groenewald from Warwickshire.

The 24-year-old South Africa-born all-rounder arrives after having had his contract at Edgbaston terminated 12 months early by mutual consent.

Groenewald, a seam bowler who bats in the lower middle order, becomes Derbyshire’s second signing in little more than a week following utility player Garry Park’s arrival from Durham.

Derbyshire head of cricket John Morris said: “I am delighted to have added to our squad with a talented cricketer who, like Garry Park, is of a good age with plenty of improvement left in him.

“Tim is an ambitious cricketer who adds depth to our seam attack as well as being a dynamic talent with the bat.

“He is an excellent addition to our squad as we look forward to the 2009 season.”

Groenewald spent three seasons at Warwickshire, although he has struggled to cement his place in the first-team, especially in four-day cricket.

He topped the county averages in the Twenty20 Cup this season and was a fixture in the NatWest Pro40 side, but he featured in a solitary LV County Championship game.

He moves to Derbyshire boasting a batting average of 21 and a bowling average of 43 from 17 first-class matches.
