Elsecar and Liverpool record early Cockspur wins

This season’s Cockspur Cup competition got off to an early start, with three First Round ties played on April 23 - the clubs involved encountering mixed fortunes with the weather.

Group Three (Yorkshire)

Holmfirth (Drakes Huddersfield League) hosted Elsecar (South Yorkshire League). Holmfirth batted first and due mainly to the efforts of C Jump (60) posted a moderate total of 142 for seven in their 45 overs. Lesroy Weeks led the Elsecar attack claiming 3-15 in his 9 overs.

Elsecar then coasted to victory by 10 wickets with more than 20 overs to spare. Matt Danks leading the way with 82 not out at a run a ball with two sixes and 14 fours, ably supported by Jason Meadows who contributed 49 not out.

Group Five (North West II)

This tie saw the clash between two Liverpool & District Competition giants. Liverpool entertained Northop Hall. The latter won the toss and elected to bat and were restricted to 157 for nine in their 45 overs. Liverpool cruised to victory by five wickets, scoring 162 for five in 35 overs.

Group Six (North West III)

Bamford Fieldhouse (Saddleworth League) were due to host Timperley (Cheshire County League) but this match was a victim of the elements, Bamford going through to the next round on the toss of a coin.

One match is scheduled to be played on Saturday April 29, between Astley & Tyldesley (Bolton Association) and Moorside (Saddleworth League). A further 103 First Round ties are due to be played on Sunday April 30, including an interesting local derby when Norcross host their mighty neighbours from Blackpool, and an intriguing tie in the South East when Beddington host Bromley.

Monday May 1 sees the first match to be played in round two when St Just entertain Grampound Road in Cornwall.
