Nottinghamshire have signed Australia batsman Adam Voges as a short-term replacement for compatriot David Hussey.
Hussey took Notts by surprise by joining the Indian Premier League despite having put pen to paper on a new contract at Trent Bridge.
He is set to miss the first six weeks of the season due to the inaugural 20-over competition in India, which starts next month, and Notts have moved to cover his absence by recruiting the highly-rated Voges.
The 28-year-old, who has played a solitary one-day international and two Twenty20 internationals, comes with a reputation for powerful strokeplay.
His maiden one-century for Western Australia came off just 62 balls – then the fastest in the history of Australian domestic cricket – and he boasts a first-class average of 40.32.
Notts director of cricket Mick Newell said: “I’m confident Voges will prove a more than capable replacement.
“He’s got an excellent pedigree and should be more or less a straight swap. The aim is for him to slot in at number four in four-day and one-day cricket.
“He’s played international cricket for Australia and has a good record with the bat, bowls a bit of left-arm spin and by all accounts is an excellent fielder.
“He wants to make a role for himself in county cricket and will have that opportunity with us.”
Hussey has been a huge success since he arrived at Notts in 2004, scoring more than 1,000 runs every year, including 1,219 at an average of 93 in the LV County Championship last season.
Newell insists Notts supporters will see him action again this summer.
“Hussey’s decision to sign for the IPL was unexpected,” he said. ”We had an agreement with him and were looking forward to seeing him for the whole season, and had to decide whether we wanted him to be a part of our future plans.
“He has assured me that he is still very keen to play for Notts and is expected to arrive at Trent Bridge later in the summer.”
