Phil Jaques’ unbeaten half-century helped Yorkshire guarantee their place in the Friends Life t20 quarter-finals with a comfortable six-wicket win over Nottinghamshire in the North Group at Trent Bridge.

Jaques struck four fours and a solitary six in his 58 not out off 47 balls while Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance provided able support to help the White Rose chase their target of 149 with 14 balls to spare.

Captain Adam Voges was the backbone of Nottinghamshire’s innings, striking 70 as the hosts made 148 for six after deciding to bat first.

It proved to be nowhere near enough, however, and Yorkshire are now five points clear of third-placed Durham with two games remaining while Nottinghamshire must beat either Derbyshire or Leicestershire to join them in the last eight.

Jonny Bairstow & Chris Read

Yorkshire limited Nottinghamshire to 148 for six, a total they passed with six wickets and 14 balls to spare to reach the quarter-finals

Notts got off to a disastrous start when Riki Wessels fell off the first delivery, caught by Adam Lyth at midwicket off Joe Root.

Michael Lumb struck two fours and a six before he fell to Richard Pyrah for 20 before England international Samit Patel was caught by Lyth at deep cover off Yorkshire captain Azeem Rafiq.

Wickets were tumbling at regular intervals to undermine the hosts’ total, with James Taylor making 15 before he was bowled by Moin Ashraf and Chris Read handed Rafiq his second wicket when he was caught by David Miller at deep square-leg.

Voges was a reassuring presence for Notts, although he only struck five fours before he was bowled by Mitchell Starc.

And it did not look a sufficient total as Lyth hammered 33 off 21 balls to take Yorkshire’s total to 48 before he was caught at long-off by Steven Mullaney attempting another maximum.

Jaques and Root put on another 51 for the second wicket until the latter departed for a classy 27 after striking Patel to Voges at extra-cover.

Yorkshire then wobbled from 99 for one to 107 for four after Jonny Bairstow and Miller departed cheaply but Jaques brought up his fifty off 44 balls.

Ballance settled to his task, striking a four off his third ball and sealed the win ruins in emphatic fashion, plundering Graeme White for successive sixes in the 18th over to be unbeaten on 26.
