Surrey have Jade Dernbach available for their Friends Life t20 South Group opener with Essex at the Kia Oval today, but are without injured Tom Maynard.

Fast bowler Dernbach has been given permission to play before joining England’s squad for the NatWest Series. He is set to feature in an attack containing overseas players Dirk Nannes and Murali Kartik.

Batsman Maynard has a shoulder problem, but could be in contention to face Middlesex at Lord’s.

Although Kevin Pietersen has retired from limited-overs internationals, he is unavailable to Surrey until July. Chris Tremlett is also missing as he continues his recovery from a back injury.

Surrey team director Chris Adams told the club’s website: “It is a competition that suits our brand of cricket, but last year we did not reach the knockout stages and that is something we intend to change this year.

“If we play to our potential we are capable of making a real impact in the competition, but we know how important it is to get off to a good start.”

Surrey squad: Rory Hamilton-Brown (captain), Jason Roy, Steven Davies (wicketkeeper), Mark Ramprakash, Zander de Bruyn, Matthew Spriegel, Zafar Ansari, Gary Wilson, Murali Kartik, Gareth Batty, Stuart Meaker, Jade Dernbach, Dirk Nannes.

Essex have just one overseas player, New Zealand’s James Franklin, and are without England internationals Alastair Cook and Ravi Bopara.

Head coach Paul Grayson told Essex’s website: “We really tried to get a second overseas player in to join us but we have been let down by a couple of players.

David Masters & Jade Dernbach

Surrey fast bowler Jade Dernbach has been allowed to play versus Essex this evening before joining England's NatWest Series squad

“It’s proved a really difficult situation trying to bring someone else in, but I’m happy with the squad we’ve got. I would have liked another one-day specialist bowler, but we’ll live with that.”

Essex squad: James Foster (capt & wkt), James Franklin, Mark Pettini, Tom Westley, Greg Smith, Owais Shah, Ryan ten Doeschate, Adam Wheater, Graham Napier, Tim Phillips, David Masters, Tymal Mills, Maurice Chambers.

Warwickshire are also missing an England duo - Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott - for their Midlands/Wales/West Group game with Somerset at Taunton.

They are still without Boyd Rankin, who is recovering from a foot injury, and prefer Richard Johnson to Tim Ambrose behind the stumps.

Warwickshire squad: Jim Troughton (capt), Keith Barker, Neil Carter, Varun Chopra, Rikki Clarke, Laurie Evans, Darren Maddy, Jeetan Patel, Steffan Piolet, Will Porterfield, Richard Johnson (wkt), Chris Woakes, Chris Wright.

Somerset are still without captain Marcus Trescothick, who is recovering from an ankle operation, but may welcome back seamer Steve Kirby to first-team action following a torn quad as they seek to improve on three straight runners-up finishes in the tournament

Acting skipper Alfonso Thomas told Somerset’s website: “It’s the competition that we have had a very good record in over the last few years and we would like to go one step further this season.

“We are obviously missing Marcus Trescothick, but we have got an exciting team with a lot of young and experienced talent who can take us that one step further.”

In their bid to go from runner-ups to winners this year, Somerset are set to unleash Ireland batsman Kevin O’Brien, whom they have signed for their first five FLt20 matches, plus South African pair Albie Morkel and Richard Levi.

They also have England limited-overs wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter available today before his NatWest Series duty. Jos Buttler, who is in the NatWest International T20 squad, bolsters their batting further.

Thomas added: “I always believe that you need guys who can win the game single-handed because they can take you over the line from nowhere, and three of them (O’Brien, Morkel and Levi) are all certainly capable of doing it.

"If you add Jos Buttler and Craig Kieswetter into it then we have got a pretty exciting batting line-up.”

Somerset squad: Alfonso Thomas (capt), Richard Levi, Craig Kieswetter (wkt), Peter Trego, Albie Morkel, Jos Buttler, Kevin O’Brien, Nick Compton, Max Waller, George Dockrell, Steve Kirby, Arul Suppiah, James Hildreth, Craig Meschede.
