Like a James Bond baddie, Marcus Trescothick is planning world supremacy after Somerset reached Friends Life t20 finals day for the fourth year in succession.

Somerset beat Essex at a packed Taunton by 27 runs to progress through to this year’s showpiece which will be held at the SWALEC Stadium.

But Trescothick is already looking further ahead than glory at Cardiff and is targeting being the top team on the planet.

“We enjoy going to the finals day and making it a bit of a habit for us,” Trescothick told

“Things feel different, we feel really good and in good spirits.

“We are desperate again to get into that Champions League and we want to be the best team in the world at T20.”

Somerset’s victory was built on an inventive 58 from 36 balls from James Hildreth who, in contrast to his team-mates, shunned power for placement to help his team reach 175 for six.

“It held the innings together nicely,” said Trescothick.

“We lost a few too many wickets at the top of the order, no-one really got the score you’d expect from the top four or five, but Hildy has done it a few times this season. It was a really important and mature knock.”

In reply, Essex lost early wickets including key players Ravi Bopara and Owais Shah which left the visitors hoping Alastair Cook might replicate his international form and turn the innings around with a big score.

But when he perished for 28, caught at short fine-leg, Essex stuttered to 148 all out, despite some late fireworks from Ryan ten Doeschate.

“Buzzing,” was Trescothick’s immediate reaction.

“It’s a massive achievement – four years in a row now. It’s a great place to be, probably the biggest day of the county season. It’s great for the supporters, great for the club and we are buzzing as a team to get there.”
