Michael Vaughan’s 82 helped Yorkshire to a 14-run win over Sussex in the Friends Provident Trophy at Headingley Carnegie.
The former England captain’s knock set up a total of 227 for five, with Gerard Brophy also contributing 68. Sussex fell just short as fast bowler Tim Bresnan ripped through the top order, claiming three of the first four batsmen.
Murray Goodwin’s 45 and Luke Wright’s 46 set up an exciting finish but, needing 17 off the last two overs with one wicket in hand, Will Beer was run out, ending Sussex’s hopes.
Surrey again failed with the bat as they fell to a 128-run loss at the hands of Gloucester at Bristol.
Having been set a target of 269 by the hosts, for whom William Porterfield top scored with 74 and Chris Taylor made a half-century, Surrey had only three players in double figures and at one stage were 85 for six.
Usman Afzaal was the only batsman to put up any resistance, but his 36 from 59 balls was not enough.
Ian Saxelby was the pick of the Gloucestershire bowlers with figures of 4-31.
Somerset cruised to a 110-run win over last year’s runners-up Kent.
Geraint Jones was unbeaten on 43 but he was not supported as Kent limped to 181 all out chasing 292.
Earlier, Marcus Trescothick smashed 70 off 41 balls to put Somerset in control at Taunton, while James Hildreth (67), Zander de Bruyn (71 not out) and Peter Trego (73no) were also on form.
Chris Benham’s 79 guided Hampshire to a four-wicket win over Leicestershire at Grace Road.
Having chosen to bat first, Leicestershire made 238 with Matthew Boyce (80) leading the way and South African Boeta Dippenaar chipping in with 65, but Hampshire knocked them off with 11 balls to spare.
Liam Dawson produced a match-winning performance for the visitors, taking 4-48 and making 35 from 48 balls batting at number six.

Northants wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien looks on as Paul Horton makes his way towards a fine 100 for Lancs
Derbyshire beat Glamorgan by four wickets in their clash at the County Ground.
The hosts put Glamorgan in to bat and they made 205 with Jamie Dalrymple top scoring with an unbeaten 75, but it proved inadequate as Derbyshire reached their target with four overs to spare.
Dan Redfern made 53 and despite a minor mid-innings collapse - they slumped from 85 without loss to 108 for four - a measured, unbeaten 43 from 81 balls by Garry Park made sure of the win.
Lancashire’s decision to field first also paid off as they sauntered to a six-wicket defeat against Northamptonshire.
Opener Paul Horton made 100 off 108 balls as Lancashire innings reached their target of 241 with more than five overs remaining.
Sajid Mahmood and Tom Smith had earlier taken three wickets each to restrict Northants’ batsmen.
In Group A, Worcestershire posted a 52-run win over Ireland in Belfast.
After rain delayed the start, the innings were reduced to 33 overs and Worcestershire made 180 for eight, with Steve Davies top scoring with 47 from 56 balls.
Despite the modest target, Ireland only managed 128 for nine from their allotted overs with Paul Stirling (51) the only batsman offering any resistance.
Scotland suffered an even heavier defeat in Group B, losing by 162 runs to Middlesex at Lord’s.
Openers Billy Godleman (82) and Phillip Hughes (74) sent Middlesex on their way to 302 for seven and the Scots then collapsed to 140 all out inside 38 overs in reply.
Kyle Coetzer added 45 off 59 balls and opener Gavin Hamilton notched 30 but they were insufficiently supported.
