Dan Redfern flicks the ball into the leg side during an attractive innings of 53 for Derbyshire this afternoon
Derbyshire survived a mid-innings collapse to begin their Friends Provident Trophy campaign with a four-wicket win over Glamorgan at the County Ground.
They slumped from 85 without loss to 108 for four chasing a modest target of 206 but a measured, unbeaten 43 from 81 balls by Garry Park made sure they got home with four overs to spare.
Dragons skipper Jamie Dalrymple had an excellent all-round game, scoring an unbeaten 75 from 102 balls and taking 2-27 from 10 overs, but a total of 205 for nine was never likely to be enough.
Their batsmen struggled on a slow pitch against some clever spin bowling from Mark Lawson and Jake Needham backed up by tigerish outfielding.
Both openers Gareth Rees and Mark Cosgrove fell to leading edges and Michael Powell became Mark Lawson's first wicket for Derbyshire when he was caught behind cutting for 32.
The pressure built up by the two spinners, who conceded only 64 in their combined 20 overs, told as the Dragons slipped to 112 for six and it was left to Dalrymple to steer his side towards a respectable total.
James Harris helped him add 44 for the seventh wicket and David Harrison also offered support until he drove to deep cover.
Dalrymple hit only one four in his fifty but struck three more in the closing overs to take the visitors past 200.

Jamie Dalrymple picks up more runs on his way to an excellent unbeaten 75. The Glamorgan skipper also picked up two wickets in a fine all-round display
Two of those came in the final over from Tim Groenewald which cost 13 but the seamer still finished with excellent figures of 3-33 from eight overs.
The Dragons’ total contained only 14 fours but the Phantoms hit 11 in the first 23 overs as openers Steve Stubbings and Dan Redfern established a solid platform with a stand of 85.
Redfern confirmed the promise he showed last season and the 19-year-old brought up his fifty, which came off 47 balls, when he drove Garnet Kruger for his seventh four.
The game was slipping away from Glamorgan but Redfern was lbw for 53 trying to sweep a full toss from Dalrymple and Stubbings went three overs later when he slogged Dean Cosker to deep midwicket.
Wavell Hinds thumped Dalrymple over mid-on for four but the West Indies batman was soon back in the pavilion when he was lbw pushing forward at the Glamorgan skipper.
When Greg Smith was caught low down by Ben Wright at midwicket in the next over, four wickets had fallen for only 23 runs in 10 overs and the Dragons were right back in the contest.
The Phantoms had scored only 42 off 16 overs from Dalrymple and Cosker but the pressure eased once they were removed from the attack.
Dominic Telo took two fours from a Cosgrove over but was bowled by Ben Wright in the next for 25 and the Dragons still had a chance when Jamie Pipe was run out by a direct hit from mid-off with 29 runs needed.
But Park calmed the home side's nerves with a composed innings and made sure there were no more scares for the Phantoms.
