Durham cruise through

Friends Provident Trophy holders Durham crushed North Division rivals Derbyshire by 117 runs to book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

The hosts made 298 for seven batting first at Chester-le-Street, with Michael Di Venuto hitting 138 at better than a run a ball to leave his former club's own qualification hopes floundering.

The Australian hit 19 fours at the head of the innings, putting on 142 for the second wicket alongside Will Smith (55).

Derbyshire's response faltered from the off, with Mark Davies removing dangerous opener Chris Rogers for two.

From there Gareth Breese took the lead, claiming 5-41 as only John Sadler, with 46, mounted any significant resistance.

The Dynamos have completed their fixtures and, although Derbyshire can draw level on points with their conquerors, their record of fewer victories leaves them banking on a Lancashire win against Yorkshire on Wednesday if they are to have a chance of progressing.

For their part, Yorkshire are in good form for that crucial clash having completed a regulation seven-wicket win over Scotland.

The Saltires made a competitive 244 all out - three of the top four hit fifties - but Anthony McGrath led a vigorous chase.

His unbeaten 105, mostly compiled in a 164-run stand with Jacques Rudolph (82), confounded the Scots as Yorkshire crossed the line with more than nine overs to spare.

Leicestershire need to pick up at least a point against Nottinghamshire on Wednesday to clinch a place in the quarter-finals after losing to Warwickshire in a rain-affected Midlands Division match at Oakham School.

Warwickshire won by eight runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method after Leicestershire, replaying to a total of 187 for eight, could manage only 53 for two from 19.3 overs at Oakham School.

It was a disappointing way to end the chase but the Foxes will be frustrated not to have pressed home their early advantage in the field, which started with Neil Carter's dismissal by Nadeem Malik before a run had been scored.

Ryan Cummins took 3-50 as the Bears slipped to 75 for five but their eventual total was built around knocks of 45 from Navdeep Poonia and Tony Frost's unbeaten 55.

In reply, Tom New made 29 not out but Carter made up for his duck by bowling HD Ackerman for 14.

Nottinghamshire top the group and look set for the last eight after beating Ireland by one run at Trent Bridge, denying the visitors a fifth win over a first-class county.

Needing six to win off the last ball, Ireland's top scorer Kevin O'Brien could only force Darren Pattinson to square-leg for four, finishing on 93 not out off 75 balls in a total of 240 for six.

The Outlaws' 241 for six was built around half-centuries from Adam Voges (82), Samit Patel (75) and Chris Read (53 not out).

Poor weather elsewhere meant no play between Hampshire and Glamorgan or Kent and Middlesex, while Somerset's clash with Gloucestershire and Essex's trip to Sussex were washed out.

Essex's point sends them into the last eight, while Gloucestershire top the South/West Division.
