Kyle Hogg celebrates the departure of Mark Cosgrove as Glamorgan slip to a perilous 21 for four in pursuit
Kyle Hogg’s performance overshadowed the surprise presence of England bowler James Anderson as Lancashire began their Friends Provident Trophy campaign with a thumping 80-run win over Glamorgan at Old Trafford.
The centrally-contracted Anderson had originally not been made available by the England and Wales Cricket Board for this game, but he claimed 1-17 off six overs to help bowl the Dragons out for just 161 in pursuit of 242 for victory.
Hogg, however, stole the limelight by taking three of the first four wickets to fall en route to figures of 3-21 from eight overs. Glamorgan never recovered from crumbling to 21 for four.
Scores of 66 from Tom Smith and Francois Du Plessis had earlier helped the hosts post a challenging 241 for six.
All-rounder Smith, who celebrated his maiden first-class hundred against Durham UCCE this week, was elevated to open the innings due to Mal Loye's absence with a torn calf.
He promptly recorded his first one-day half-century for Lancashire, having made 52 while on loan at Leicestershire in the NatWest Pro40 last season.
South African Kolpak batsman Du Plessis registed his fifth one-day fifty for the Red Rose a little over 24 hours after arriving in England following a fine domestic season with the Nashua Titans in his homeland.

Tom Smith forces off the back foot en route to a measured 66 off 90 balls in an unfamiliar role at the top of the order
Lancashire were reduced to 30 for two in the eighth over of their innings thanks to wickets for James Harris and Adam Shantry, Hogg and overseas player Ashwell Prince the men to go.
Left-handed Smith, who made 66 off 90 balls, and Mark Chilton put on 64 for the third wicket, while Smith also shared a stand of 78 for the fourth wicket with Du Plessis, whose 66 spanned 72 deliveries, to steady the ship.
David Harrison's spell of 3-44 from nine overs was perhaps the main reason Lancashire could not quite capitalise on reaching 172 for three in the 36th over, although new skipper Glen Chapple supplied late impetus with 18 not out off 17 balls.
Gareth Rees, Michael Powell, whose off stump was sent cart-wheeling by Anderson, Tom Maynard, Mark Cosgrove and Jamie Dalrymple all departed early to leave Glamorgan wobbling on 38 for five in the 15th over in response.
Although Ben Wright, who hit 34, and Mark Wallace put on 53 for the sixth wicket to halt the slide somewhat, the former was caught at deep point by Steven Croft in left-arm spinner Gary Keedy's first over to confirm Lancashire’s dominance.
Wallace was Glamorgan's shining light with the bat as he compiled a doughty 60 off 61 balls, but Chapple and Sajid Mahmood claimed two late wickets apiece to wrap matters up. Mahmood finished with 3-17.
