Superb swing bowling from new Nottinghamshire signing Darren Pattinson and an unbeaten 42 from overseas batsman Adam Voges helped the Outlaws to a comfortable six-wicket victory over Northamptonshire.
Pattinson, 28, born in Grimsby but raised in Australia, picked up 3-39 on his one-day debut as Northamptonshire were restricted to 189 for seven off their 50 overs at Trent Bridge.
The visitors’ total was based around a sixth-wicket partnership of 106 between Stephen Peters and Lance Klusener after they slumped to 64 for five.
Opener Peters held the innings together with 90 off 125 balls, including eight fours, while Klusener made an unbeaten 60.
Notts captain Chris Read won the toss and chose to field, hoping to use the humid and cloudy conditions to his advantage.
And opening bowler Charlie Shreck weighed in with an early wicket, trapping Riki Wessels leg before for four with a yorker in the fifth over.
Niall O’Brien nibbled at a short ball from Pattinson and gave Read a straightforward catch behind the stumps, while Pattinson removed David Sales thanks to a low catch from Will Jefferson at second slip.
And Rob White followed five balls later with another catch for Read, this time off the bowling of the evergreen Mark Ealham.
Notts youngster Luke Fletcher, making his debut at Trent Bridge after signing a one-year contract in pre-season, got his career off to the perfect start.
The 19-year-old, born and raised in Nottingham, claimed the scalp of Steelbacks skipper Nicky Boje caught behind with his second delivery to leave the visitors rocking.
But Peters and Klusener dug in to keep the scoreboard ticking over before finally cutting loose in the closing overs.
Peters was yorked by Ealham after making room and Pattinson returned to snap up the wicket of Johann Louw, who aimed for a big hit and only succeeded in finding Voges at long-on.
Notts were set to begin the chase of their target of 190 when light persistent rain started to fall, much to the frustration of spectators.
With two breaks for rain, the hosts were left to chase 143 from 30 overs but found themselves on the back foot when Bilal Shafayat was leg before to David Lucas in the fifth over.
Jefferson and Mark Wagh drove confidently against the seam of Lucas, Johann Louw and Klusener but both were undone by the spin bowling of Jason Brown and Boje after good starts.
Rising star Samit Patel added some momentum with sixes off Monty Panesar and Brown only to fall to the returning Louw attempting one big hit too many.
But Voges and Read finished off the chase with 12 balls to spare, with Read mowing Louw over midwicket for six on the way.
