Hawks slay reprieved Nottinghamshire

Friends Provident Trophy

Michael Lumb

Michael Lumb punches the air after Hampshire's 10-wicket win over the Outlaws secured top spot in Group A

Nottinghamshire were comprehensively thrashed by Hampshire but still squeezed into the Friends Provident Trophy quarter-finals thanks to Ireland’s surprise victory over Worcestershire.

Veteran all-rounder Dominic Cork picked up 4-18, his best one-day figures for four years, as the Outlaws were dismissed for just 145 at Trent Bridge.

The feeble Nottinghamshire total was put in perspective by Hampshire openers Jimmy Adams (73 not out) and Michael Lumb (72 not out), who both hit half-centuries to complete a 10-wicket win.

The result, combined with Ireland’s victory at New Road, meant that Hampshire topped Group A to secure a home tie for the quarter-finals, while Notts finished second and will have an away trip at the weekend.

Notts got off to the worst possible start after winning the toss, with Mark Wagh chipping a return catch to Cork off the first ball of the match.

And the former England all-rounder was soon celebrating again thanks to a stunning catch from Chris Benham, who plunged to his right at short midwicket to catch a full-blooded pull from Samit Patel.

With the ball keeping low and nipping around off the seam, Cork was in his element and was backed up by exemplary glovework by Nic Pothas, who showed sharp reactions to stump Ali Brown as the batsman lost his balance to a leg-side delivery.

Australia international Adam Voges hit the first two boundaries of the innings but perished at the hands of Hamza Riazuddin, playing on for 17.

A mix-up between Will Jefferson and Chris Read saw the giant Jefferson run out with a direct hit from cover while Read edged a seaming ball from Sean Ervine behind to Pothas.

And when Paul Franks skied the occasional off-spin of Michael Carberry to mid-off to leave the score at 68 for seven, Notts were struggling just to beat their lowest-ever score in the competition of 121, set last year against Warwickshire.

Nic Pothas & Ali Brown

Nic Pothas pulled off a smart stumping to remove dangerman Ali Brown and further Nottinghamshire's slide at Trent Bridge

They did pass that total thanks to some late hitting from Ealham and Andre Adams, who hit four deliveries from Ervine for four, four, six and four to pass 100 in the 38th over.

He was then caught at deep midwicket off Imran Tahir, Luke Fletcher handed Benham his second catch and Cork returned for another Pothas stumping to remove Jason Brown and finish the innings.

Despite the travails of the home side, Hampshire openers Lumb and James Adams made batting look far easier as they cruised past 50 in the seventh over.

Both batsmen showed aggression with Lumb hitting straight down the ground while James Adams was quick to punish the short ball with cuts and pulls.

Adams was first to his fifty with a straight six off Jason Brown, while Lumb pulled Franks to square leg for a half-century of his own.

And the game was sealed with the first ball of the 30th over, which Lumb crashed through the covers for four.
