Hick wins Sixes League
Worcestershire's Graeme Hick has won the Sky Sports Sixes League with 28 sixes from 850 deliveries.
Hick finished four maximums ahead of second-placed Luke Wright of Sussex, who finished with 24 sixes from 403 balls. Nottinghamshire’s David Hussey was third with 23 maximums from 545.
Hick, the oldest player on the county circuit at 41, said: “I’m thrilled to win.
“It’s been a good season for me and the team’s success in one-day competitions has helped. It’s great to win.
“It wasn’t until a few weeks ago when I first went top that I started to think about winning. Batting lower down the order has meant that I’ve often been present at the end of innings when there’s an emphasis on big-hitting.”
Hick took outright lead of the sixes lead in week 19 at the end of August after hitting two maximums to break a three-way tie at the top. He did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the summer.
Hick's team-mate Moeen Ali won the September award with a total of seven sixes during the month, six of which he hit in his whirlwind 46-ball century against Northamptonshire.
The Sky Sports Sixes League ranks the top ten batsmen that have hit the most sixes in Friends Provident Trophy, Twenty20 Cup and NatWest Pro40 matches.
It provides batsmen with another incentive for big-hitting with £2,000 and the sixes trophy for the winner, plus awards for each month’s big hitter. This summer’s other monthly winners were David Hussey (May), Hick (June) Luke Wright (July), and Phil Mustard (August).
In 2004, Mark Ealham won the inaugural League with 20 sixes off 359 balls, while Ian Blackwell landed the prize in 2005 with 45 maximums off 669 deliveries. Somerset’s Cameron White won last year with 32 sixes from 744 deliveries.
