Nottinghamshire have confirmed David Hussey as their overseas player for the next two years.

The Australian batsman, who averages 65 during his four seasons at Trent Bridge, put pen to paper on a new deal keeping him at the club until 2009.

“There were no doubts in my mind about coming back and it’s a pretty exciting time for Notts with Chris as captain,” said Hussey, referring to Chris Read’s appointment as captain.

“I think he will help us to claim some much-warranted silverware and I’m confident we can challenge again for the championship title.”

Counties are allowed only one overseas player from next season onwards, but Notts director of cricket Mick Newell had no hesitation in extending Hussey’s stay.

“Hussey has been a fantastic overseas player for us who has never let us down and, if anything, has got better and better,” Newell said.

“In 2007 he seemed to reach a new level of maturity in his performances and we are very keen to see that continue.

“He slid quite easily into the captaincy at the start of the season and is a senior and hugely respected figure in the dressing room.”

Hussey, 30, has set his sights on a one-day trophy to go with the championship title Notts won in 2005.

He added: “I would love to play at Lord’s in a one-day final and that’s one of my biggest goals for next season.

“Winning the championship is still the biggest thing you can achieve in county cricket but it’s been a long time since Notts lifted a one-day trophy, and it’s something I and the rest of the squad want to change.”
