Essex stalwart Doug Insole has been named as the new President of the MCC at their annual general meeting held at Lord’s.

Insole will succeed current President Robin Marlar and begin his one-year term of office in October after a lifetime in the sport as a player and administrator.

He began his association with the game at Essex during a career which spanned 450 first-class matches and yielded over 25,000 runs and more than 50 centuries, including one against every first-class county other than his own.

His prolific county form earned him nine Test caps and a century against South Africa before becoming a key figure in the establishment after his retirement, serving as a Test selector for 10 years and managing England's tours to Australia in 1978-79 and 1982-83.

Insole, who is also a former chairman of Essex and their current president, has also been a member of the MCC’s cricket committee and became a Life President of the club in 1979.

He was also a member of the main MCC committe for over 30 years and was awarded a CBE in 1979 for his service to cricket.
