Australian Test player Simon Katich is to take over as captain of Derbyshire from Graeme Welch for the 2007 season.

All-rounder Welch has decided to step down after one season in charge in order to concentrate on his own performance, with Katich taking over following discussions with director of cricket David Houghton.

Katich said: “I have been fortunate to play under some great captains and have led New South Wales so I intend to bring all that experience to Derbyshire and carry on the progress the club made under Graeme.”

Houghton explained: “Graeme was an outstanding captain on and off the field for us last year but in Simon we had a natural alternative and proven leader.

“In Simon we had a natural alternative and proven leader. He will bring a wealth of experience to the role and when I spoke to him about the job he was very excited about the prospect of leading the side.

“He has all the qualities we need to lead us to the next level which has to be our goal for the season.”

Welch added: “It has been a difficult decision to step down but I feel I need to be able to give 100% to my own performance and my contribution to the team as a player, and there were times last year when I felt that wasn’t the case.

“Simon will get my full support and we are lucky to have such a great player coming to the club and I’m sure he will be an outstanding captain.”
