Kent have completed the signing of former South Africa all-rounder Justin Kemp as a Kolpak player after he announced his retirement from international cricket.

The 30-year-old put pen to paper on a two-year contract on the day Kent heard that ex-Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood will not be classed as an overseas player.

Mahmood, who has plied his trade at Surrey since 2002, has been granted British citizenship, leaving Kent free to sign an overseas player.

“I am really looking forward to playing for Kent again,” said Kemp, who had spells with the club in 2005 and 2006.

“Rob Key and Graham Ford have built a really strong squad and the plans for the ground at Canterbury are very far-sighted.

“These are exciting times and I am keen to make a real contribution to the success of the club over the next two years.”

Kemp, a hard-hitting batsman and right-arm seamer, played four Tests and 85 one-day internationals for South Africa, the last of which came against Pakistan last October.

He averages almost 36 with the bat and 26 with the ball in 99 first-class matches.

Kent chairman of cricket Graham Johnson said: “It's great news for the club that Justin has committed himself to Kent for the next two years.

“Kent members will remember some of his amazing innings when he was with us in 2005 and 2006 and will be delighted to hear of his return.

“His experience will be invaluable to our younger players and his all-round talents and approach will significantly strengthen our squad.

“Having tasted success in 2007 we are keen to build a squad capable of competing and winning in all forms of cricket, with competition for places.

“With the addition of Justin and Azhar to the squad, Kent followers can look forward to the 2008 with relish.”
