Tim Ambrose is set to return to Warwickshire's line-up for their LV= County Championship Division One fixture with Middlesex at Uxbridge.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Ambrose missed the match against Surrey at Edgbaston with a thigh strain, and had been expected to be out of action for longer.

However, his swift recovery should see him reclaim the gloves from Richard Johnson, who returned from a loan spell of Derbyshire to feature in Warwickshire’s previous fixture.

Ashley Giles’ side are currently second to Nottinghamshire in Division One, by virtue of having lost one game more than their rivals, but have the opportunity to pull clear as they play their game in hand this week.

Middlesex will be without Steven Finn as the seamer joins back up with the England squad ahead of the second Investec Test with South Africa.

They will be hoping to bounce back after a disappointing defeat to Durham, where they were dismissed for just 102 in their second innings.

Somerset, who still have high hopes of claiming their first County Championship crown, will travel to Liverpool to face Lancashire.

Marcus Trescothick is set to make his first appearance in the competition since April and victory would move his team ahead of Nottinghamshire, who had to settle for a draw against Sussex last week.

Lancashire all-rounders Tom Smith and Luke Procter are unavailable due to thigh and side strains respectively, so Andrea Agathangelou comes into the squad.

Sussex welcome Worcestershire to The PROBIZ County Ground in the other Division One match.

The home side will be upbeat after their rearguard performance against Notts, which saw Ed Joyce and Chris Nash share an opening stand of 216 to help salvage a draw against the title hopefuls.

The St. Helen’s Ground in Swansea plays host to Glamorgan’s annual visit to west Wales for their Division Two clash with Gloucestershire.

Robert Croft returns to Glamorgan’s squad on his home turf, while Nick James has also been brought in.

Yorkshire will be hoping to get their promotion challenge back on track against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

Steve Harmison picked up a side injury during the White Rose’s disappointing draw at Grace Road last week and is not fit for selection, while Ryan Sidebottom is still absent with a calf injury.

Northants captain Andrew Hall is set to make his return from injury, having been recalled along with Chaminda Vaas, David Willey and Stephen Peters. Jack Brooks is unavailable due to a niggle, however.

Leicestershire will travel to Chelmsford to face Essex, with both teams attempt to move themselves away from the foot of the table.
