West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul is set to make his first appearance of the season for Durham after joining up with the county as overseas player.
Chanderpaul, who played for Durham last year, is likely to replace Ben Harmison in the batting order for the LV County Championship Division One match against Surrey at Guildford.
Durham will be without Paul Collingwood, who retains his place in England’s squad for the second npower Test against South Africa.
Head coach Geoff Cook has included young leg-spinner Scott Borthwick, who made his first XI debut in the Twenty20 Cup, in his 13-man squad.
Surrey are without Chanderpaul’s international team-mate Pedro Collins, who picked up a side strain against Nottinghamshire.
Fellow seamer Jimmy Ormond is set to replace Collins while off-spinner Murtaza Hussain comes into the 12-man squad.
Coach Alan Butcher gives Chris Schofield an outside chance of playing after recovering from a fractured thumb and the leg-spinner is on stand-by.
Surrey are still without captain Mark Butcher, who underwent knee surgery last month, and James Benning due to a back problem.
