Jonathan Trott scored his first century for two years as Warwickshire took on Derbyshire in Division Two of the LV County Championship at Derby.
Ian Bell fell in the forties for the third time this season but did become the quickest home-grown Warwickshire player to reach 5,000 first-class runs.
There was a minor injury scare for England wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose who ricked his neck warming up before the start of play and was unable to bat in his usual position for Warwickshire at number six.
Ambrose came in at the fall of the sixth wicket to see Trott to his hundred but a burst of four wickets for eight runs in 21 balls from seamer Tom Lungley bowled out Warwickshire for 310 and restricted them to a lead of 40.
Ambrose was left stranded on 34 and although he did not appear to be restricted, did not keep wicket when Derbyshire survived two overs to close on three without loss.
Warwickshire looked well placed to build a sizeable total after Ian Westwood had gone cheaply in the second over of the morning, caught behind for five slashing at a wide ball from Charl Langeveldt.
Darren Maddy and Bell then batted steadily for the next 22 overs before Derbyshire broke through six overs before lunch.
Maddy had hit 10 fours in his 57 which came off 105 balls when he misjudged a delivery from Jon Clare and was adjudged leg before, playing no shot.
Bell appeared to be setting himself for a big score when he played watchfully to score 48 off 91 balls and it was a surprise when he was caught behind down the leg side trying to turn Langeveldt off his hip.
It was a good catch by former Warwickshire wicketkeeper Freddie Klokker - standing in for Jamie Pipe, who was having treatment on a damaged finger.
Klokker claimed another victim when Michael Powell edged Langeveldt to end a stand of 99 in 30 overs with Trott and the visitors were in danger of falling short when Nayan Doshi struck twice.
Ant Botha fell for a duck on his return to Derby when he skied a swipe at Doshi and Ian Salisbury made only three before he top-edged a sweep.
Trott survived a loud lbw shout against Lungley on 98 before he leg-glanced him to the fine leg boundary to reach his hundred - which came off 191 balls and contained nine fours.
But he was then beaten by a ball which kept low and Neil Carter obligingly fell into a trap when he hooked Lungley to long leg, who had been moved there the previous ball.
Lungley was on a hat-trick after bowling Monde Zondeki - who was beaten playing back to a full-length ball - but James Anyon denied him and helped Ambrose take his team past 300.
Ambrose drove and swept Doshi for boundaries but Klokker held his fourth catch to remove Anyon and leave the match in the balance with two days to play.
