Wagg and Collins lord over batsmen

Pedro Collins

Pedro Collins produced the riposte Surrey needed after they had been dismissed for 131 at the County Ground

Graham Wagg's career-best figures of 6-35 were answered by a four-wicket burst from Pedro Collins as bowlers dominated the opening day of the LV= County Championship Division Two match between Surrey and Derbyshire.

Seventeen wickets fell as Surrey were skittled for 131 at Derby, having won the toss.

Derbyshire slumped to 152 for seven in reply, and despite the batsmen’s struggles the visiting pitch liason officer reported no problems with the County Ground surface.

It was largely swing that caused the clatter of wickets, with no batsman reaching 50, and the scores would have been even lower but for a total of 59 extras.

A hip injury had prevented the left-arm seamer bowling in the opening match at Chelmsford but he wasted no time in showing why he was Derbyshire's leading wicket-taker last season.

The former Warwickshire all-rounder exploited a grassy pitch which provided pace and bounce to take the first four wickets in the opening 13 overs of a sunny morning.

Surrey, again without the suspended Mark Ramprakash and the injured Mark Butcher, could not recover.

Michael Brown edged low to first slip, Laurie Evans was taken at second and Usman Afzaal was bowled by one that came back.

After Scott Newman also fell to a slip catch, James Benning drove Greg Smith loosely to point before Wagg celebrated his fifth victim when Chris Jordan was lbw playing across the line.

At least Jon Batty showed some resistance and with Chris Schofield in tow, carried Surrey to 99 for six before Schofield was struck on the knee by Jon Clare and had to retire hurt.

Andre Nel helped Batty take the seventh-wicket stand to 66, but Wagg struck with his first ball back when he trapped the Surrey wicketkeeper lbw for 36.

Wagg then pulled up with cramp and had to leave the field, but Smith took over by bowling Nel. Although Schofield returned with a runner, he lasted only two balls before Clare had him lbw for 10.

Smith wrapped up the innings with his third wicket but Derbyshire, without captain Chris Rogers, were soon struggling as Surrey's pacemen hit back.

Garry Park edged Jade Dernbach to second slip and Nel removed Stuart Law for a duck. Steve Stubbings was caught behind driving at Collins.

Wavell Hinds and Dan Redfern put the conditions into perspective, but the innings went into decline when Jordan had Hinds lbw for 26.

Collins reduced Derbyshire to 88 for seven with a spell of 3-8 in 12 balls, but a dropped catch by Batty when Wagg was on four proved costly.

Smith and Wagg plundered some wayward bowling as Surrey's seamers lost their line, adding 64 in 15 overs to give Derbyshire a lead of 21.
