Redfern shines amid gloom

Dan Redfern made light of numerous stoppages for rain to make 69 not out at Derby

Derbyshire's promising teenage batsman Dan Redfern underlined his potential with a career-best unbeaten 69 on another rain-affected day against Glamorgan.

The 18-year-old left-hander dominated a fifth-wicket stand with Wavell Hinds to make sure the home side reached the follow-on target of 199 at Derby.

Derbyshire closed the third day of the LV County Championship Division Two clash - when 55 overs were lost - on 225 for five, 123 behind.

But with more rain forecast for tomorrow, the match appears to be heading for a draw.

Conditions had been overcast and cheerless from the start when Derbyshire resumed on 82 for two - 266 behind - and only seven balls were bowled before a shower forced the teams off for 20 minutes.

When play got under way again, Derbyshire lost Dan Birch, well caught at cover by Alex Wharf as he drove loosely at Adam Shantry with eight runs added.

Shantry had taken the first three wickets to fall and Derbyshire had just reached three figures when there was another success for Glamorgan.

Greg Smith had made six when he pulled Jason Gillespie low to Gareth Rees, but Glamorgan were held up again when rain stopped play for another 35 minutes.

The entire afternoon session was washed out but the skies cleared and the ground was bathed in bright sunshine when the game restarted at 4.30pm with 23 overs to bowl.

Hinds played and missed numerous times but did not miss out when the Glamorgan seamers strayed in direction, pulling Wharf for four and driving him down the ground for another boundary.

Shantry, who was the pick of the attack, thought he had the West Indian caught behind but the appeal was rejected and Hinds brought up his fifty in the next over.

He drove Shantry over long-off for six before his seventh four took him to a half-century spanning 133 balls.

Hinds lasted only three more overs before he tried to pull Harrison and was caught behind off the back of the bat for 54 to end a stand of 79 in 26 overs.

England Under-19 international Redfern looked more assured than Hinds and reached his second championship half-century, off 82 balls and containing seven fours, with a flashing square cut off Harrison.

He played several more handsome strokes as he and Tom New added 45 in nine overs, but with so much time lost to the weather, a victory for either side looks unlikely regardless of the weather tomorrow.
