Surrey have left veteran batsman Mark Ramprakash out of their squad to face Somerset in Division One of the LV= County Championship.

The 42-year-old former England player, who has scored 35,614 first-class runs, has managed just 62 in eight championship innings this season and bagged a pair in the draw with Worcestershire last week. Jason Roy, who is half Ramprakash’s age, is set to fill the void.

Surrey team director Chris Adams said: “We have not selected Mark Ramprakash for the game against Somerset, which was a very difficult decision to make.

“Mark has had a tough start to the season and has not made the impact with the bat that he would have wanted to. But you do not score the amount of runs that Mark has without knowing your own game and I know he will work hard to find his form again.

“The challenge now for Mark is to push hard to regain his place for the remainder of the season.”

Surrey welcome back fast bowlers Jade Dernbach and Stuart Meaker from England Lions duty, but are without Kevin Pietersen, who is set to play in the first Investec Test with West Indies, and injured England team-mate Chris Tremlett.

Seamer George Edwards, who took five Worcestershire wickets on championship debut last week, retains his place in a 13-man party.

Somerset hope to have Jos Buttler back after he missed last week’s draw with Durham, having spilt hand webbing. They are set to include in-form batsman Nick Compton, who was with the Lions last week.

However, the visitors could still be without injured quartet Marcus Trescothick, Steve Kirby, Gemaal Hussain and Adam Dibble.

England limited-overs all-rounder Chris Woakes is set to make his first championship appearance of the season after being named in Warwickshire’s XI to take on Lancashire at Edgbaston.

Woakes, who has played four one-day and three Twenty20 internationals, made his comeback from an ankle injury and took two wickets in Sunday’s Clydesdale Bank 40 demolition of Derbyshire.

Warwickshire are without seamer Boyd Rankin, who has a foot problem, plus England batsmen Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott, who are on Test duty.

Likewise, defending champions Lancashire are missing James Anderson for the match between first and second in Division One last year. All-rounder Tom Smith is still sidelined with a hamstring injury, but Simon Kerrigan is available after being 12th man for the Lions.

Worcestershire are hoping to have all-rounder Gareth Andrew available for a competitive game for the first time this season when they host Sussex at New Road.

Andrew is close to a return from knee surgery and could partially offset the loss of seamer Alan Richardson, who is out for at least a fortnight with a shoulder tear.

Sussex will make at least one change from last week’s draw with Lancashire with Ben Brown set to keep wicket in place of England’s Matt Prior.
