Northamptonshire will be without captain Andrew Hall for their LV= County Championship Division Two opener with Derbyshire at Derby from tomorrow.

The former South Africa all-rounder is recovering from a calf strain and David Sales will lead the side.

Hall said: “Obviously I am disappointed to miss the first game of the 2012 season as I wanted to help the team get off to a great start. However, I will look forward to getting back onto the pitch as soon as possible.”

Northants are also missing seamer Luke Evans, who has a back injury, but could hand debuts to South African-born left-arm spinner Con de Lange.

Derbyshire have confirmed New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill will play, having recently arrived in the UK.

Tim Groenewald, Tony Palladino and Mark Turner have been named in a party of 14, also featuring winter signing David Wainwright, following successful rehabilitation from operations. Tom Poynton will take the gloves after the retirement of Luke Sutton.

Yorkshire and Kent will respectively be without Tim Bresnan and James Tredwell, who are on England duty, for the meeting of new coaches Jason Gillespie and Jimmy Adams at Headingley Carnegie.

Relegated with Hampshire last year, the White Rose are also missing former Australia batsman Phil Jaques, who does not arrive until later in the month, but seamer Ajmal Shahzad has recovered from ankle surgery to be named in a 13-strong squad.

Yorkshire first-team coach Gillespie told ecb.co.uk: “It’s going to be a real challenge for us. But we are really looking forward to playing Kent. They have got a new coach in Jimmy Adams. He’s a wonderful guy and it’s good to see he has got an opportunity with Kent.

“They are going to be tough opponents and we are going to have to work really hard and play our best cricket.”

Kent have included new signings Scott Newman (loan), Ben Harmison, Brendan Nash, Michael Powell, Mark Davies and Charlie Shreck in their squad of a dozen.

Head coach Adams told ecb.co.uk: “Just playing Yorkshire, you talk about another county with a really rich heritage, rich tradition in first-class cricket in England. The first game of the season, everyone will be excited.”

Essex are without seamer Charl Willoughby due to a slight groin strain, but may hand debuts to their two other South African close-season signings for the clash with Gloucestershire at Chelmsford.

Greg Smith and Alviro Petersen are in a 12-man squad, but Owais Shah and Ryan ten Doeschate are at the Indian Premier League while Alastair Cook and Ravi Bopara are on England duty.

On Willoughby’s injury, head coach Paul Grayson said: "It's nothing serious, just a slight niggle and he was desperate to play. But we think it's sensible to allow him a little more time to recover and have him fully fit for the Yorkshire match in a couple of weeks."

All-rounder Paul Muchall, who signed a two-year deal yesterday, and Dan Housego, who has joined from Middlesex, are in Gloucestershire’s 12-man party. New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson is not yet available.

West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan and former Kent seamer Robbie Joseph could make their Leicestershire debuts against Glamorgan, who are set to include Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques at Grace Road but will have to do without James Harris due to a groin problem.
