Bresnan back with a bang

Watch free daily video highlights from every LV= County Championship match here on this summer

Watch highlights from the Emirates Durham ICG where Yorkshire and England paceman Tim Bresnan enjoyed a fruitful return to competitive cricket

Tim Bresnan took a wicket with his first ball and finished with 4-41 on his first outing of the season for Yorkshire against Durham.

Honours finished even when Graham Onions, another bowler aiming to secure an England Test place, took his second wicket in the final over of this LV= County Championship meeting.

He had Andrew Gale lbw for 25 as Yorkshire closed on 57 for three in reply to Durham's 237.

Joe Root was still there, looking very assured on 30 and apparently unruffled by being largely to blame in the run-out of Phil Jaques for a duck.

Durham recovered from eight for two through a third-wicket stand of 86 before losing five wickets for 16 runs to stand on 112 for seven.

Wicketkeeper Phil Mustard then made a valuable 70 before he was last out, bowled by an Adil Rashid googly when looking to keep the strike after the last three wickets had put on 125.

Despite the dire form of his top four, Durham skipper Paul Collingwood chose to bat and saw Bresnan's opener hit the top of off stump, resulting in a second successive golden duck for Keaton Jennings.

Ryan Sidebottom had Mark Stoneman caught at gully off bat and pad and both seamers continued to impress, only for their best balls to beat the bat.

Yorkshire preferred ex-Durham man Liam Plunkett to Jack Brooks but, when the former came on as first change, his first over went for 11 and took the pressure off.

Plunkett did manage a wicket with the second ball of his next spell, when a yorker had Scott Borthwick lbw, but his 10 overs cost 67.

Sidebottom was unfortunate to pick up only one scalp as he enjoyed an excellent economy rate of 1.68 an over.

In Durham's initial recovery, Will Smith and Dale Benkenstein both reached 40.

However, Smith then hooked Bresnan to long-leg, Ben Stokes edged the same bowler to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow and Benkenstein was caught low at third slip off Steven Patterson to make it three wickets in eight balls.

Collingwood faced 15 deliveries before he was beaten by late inswing from Bresnan and lost his leg stump.

Plunkett's second spell allowed Mustard and Callum Thorp to prosper, while Onions feasted on some tasty offerings from Rashid before he was run out for 27.

Mustard reached his 81-ball half-century with a six wide of long-on off Patterson and pressed on with a variety of sweeps off Rashid.

Yorkshire's innings began almost as badly as Durham's when Adam Lyth played on to Onions' fourth ball.

Soon after, Root set off for a run, but stopped to leave Jaques stranded.

However, the England batsman had few problems in putting on 44 with captain Gale prior to Onions' late strike.
