Graham Onions kept his name firmly in the England frame with a five-wicket haul for Durham as Yorkshire’s batsmen struggled again on a truncated day at the Emirates Durham ICG.

Rain delayed the start until 4.10pm and the White Rose - who lost heavily to Sussex in their opening game - then progressed serenely from an overnight 57 for three to 96 without further loss before the rot set in.

Yorkshire were ultimately indebted to an unbeaten 25 from ex-Durham man Liam Plunkett as they scrambled to 177 for a first-innings deficit of 60.

Onions had run out Phil Jaques and taken two wickets the previous evening; when he removed the rest of the top six his figures read 5-49.

He went on to concede a further 14 runs, 12 coming in a solitary over as Adil Rashid capitalised on being dropped on five by adding 20 to his tally.

Rashid was blameless in falling lbw to become the first of three victims for Ben Stokes, but Jonny Bairstow, Tim Bresnan and Ryan Sidebottom all got out recklessly.

Neither Onions nor Chris Rushworth posed much threat in the first 50 minutes as Bairstow and Joe Root accumulated steadily.

Root looked perfectly assured in reaching 49 before a ball which kept a shade low took out his middle stump.

In Onions' next over, Bairstow skied an attempted pull to be caught by Mark Stoneman, positioned for the shot at deep square-leg.

The left-handed Gary Ballance then pushed at a ball leaving him outside off stump and edged to Phil Mustard, giving Onions a third scalp in as many overs.

Rushworth was generally innocuous in conditions which were not especially favourable to the bowlers, but he claimed a wicket when Bresnan flashed at a short ball and was caught at head height by first slip Paul Collingwood.

Sidebottom helped Plunkett put on 25 before hooking Stokes to long-leg and a fast yorker from the all-rounder accounted for last man Steve Patterson with two overs of the day's allocation remaining.
