Michael Di Venuto hit the winning runs for Durham at Canterbury

Michael Di Venuto hit the winning runs for Durham as they face an agonising wait to see if they have won the LV County Championship Division One title after completing an eight-wicket win over Kent at Canterbury.

A win for Sussex against Worcestershire at Hove would see the southern county retain their title, barring an unlikely win for Lancashire against Surrey at the Brit Oval.

Kent resumed their second innings on the overnight score of 99 for three and lost their remaining seven wickets in just under two hours' play for an addition of 61 runs.

The damage to the Kent innings was done rapidly by Liam Plunkett who removed Martin van Jaarsveld with the 12th ball of the day after the batsman had added just one run to his overnight score of 14.

Plunkett struck again in his next over having Sam Northeast caught off the shoulder of the bat by Mark Stoneman who dived forward at point to take a fine catch at full stretch.

Plunkett completed an excellent 13-ball spell in which he claimed 3-5 when he had Neil Dexter edged behind for 11.

There was little of significance to come from the rest of the home side's innings. Graham Onions, having replaced Paul Wiseman dismissed James Tredwell with the help of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, at first slip, who also took the catch to remove Ryan McLaren for eight and Kent were 137 for eight.

On the same total Simon Cook was bowled, first ball, with Ottis Gibson taking both those wickets.

A late flourish from Martin Saggers (14) took his side to 160 before Wiseman returned for a second spell and bowled Saggers to finish with most impressive figures of 4-45. Geraint Jones remained not out with 25.

Needing just 52 runs for victory, the visitors lost two wickets, in the fourth and seven overs, with Stoneman (6) caught at mid-wicket from a pull-shot, off Matthew Walker, and Kyle Coetzer was also held in the same area off Joe Denly.

Finally, Di Venuto (23) hit the winning run off Denly who had 1-12 and Walker took one for 10. Wiseman remained not out with 17.
