Rain ensured only 45 minutes of play were possible on the second day of the LV= County Championship match between Durham and Lancashire.

Paul Horton became the first player to carry his bat for the Red Rose since Alec Swann, brother of England spinner Graeme, scored 84 against Hampshire at Old Trafford in 1992 as Lancashire’s two remaining wickets added 29 runs.

They were dismissed for 170, securing a very useful lead of 68, and Durham faced only three balls in their second innings before the rain returned.

Horton equalled Cyril Washbrook’s score of 49 not out in 1935 and since then no-one has carried his bat for Lancashire for a lower score.

The 29-year-old Sydney-born opener continued to provide the solidity Lancashire’s top order has lacked following his 455-minute vigil at Edgbaston two weeks ago, when an unbeaten 137 in the second innings earned a draw against Warwickshire.

Kyle Hogg twice edged Steve Harmison for four in today’s second over and added two more runs before the ex-England paceman had him caught at second slip for 33.

In the context of a low-scoring game, Hogg’s stand of 46 has given Lancashire a big advantage with both teams seeking their first win of the season.

With last man Simon Kerrigan for company, Horton drove Harmison over cover and pulled a very short ball in front of midwicket for another four.

In the ninth over of the day, Graham Onions had Kerrigan well caught at third slip by Scott Borthwick to finish with 5-43.
