Craig Kieswetter added a crucial unbeaten 39 to eight match catches as Somerset set up a final-day victory push against Durham at the Emirates Durham ICG.

Poor light meant only 35 overs were bowled on day three, yet Somerset reached 96 for two in their second innings and need a further 139 to win in conditions that are expected to improve tomorrow.

There was a hint in the ease with which Durham’s last man Chris Rushworth scored 18 that batting was not as hazardous as when 18 wickets fell in 78 overs on Thursday.

Craig Kieswetter's 39 not out put Somerset in position to win their opening LV= County Championship clash with hosts Durham

Unfortunately for the hosts, Rushworth went in to face the day's fifth ball when play began at 1:40pm after Phil Mustard was run out; he turned Alfonso Thomas to fine-leg, risked a second run and failed to beat Jamie Overton's excellent throw.

Graham Onions appeared untroubled on nine not out, but Rushworth perished when he tried to pull Thomas and gave Kieswetter his fifth catch of the innings.

The wicket ensured Thomas finished with impressive figures of 4-29 as Durham were dismissed for 116.

Somerset began their pursuit, taking 30 off the first six overs, including 10 from Rushworth's third; Arul Suppiah dominated the scoring after Marcus Trescothick opened up by straight driving Onions’ fourth ball for four.

However, Onions had Suppiah lbw for 17 and, after a 20-minute break for bad light, Kieswetter dominated a stand of 43, hitting two of his five fours off successive balls from the sole wicket-taker.

Trescothick was twice beaten by Callum Thorp, who conceded just 10 runs in nine overs, but the Somerset captain appeared to have got through a sticky patch when Ben Stokes struck after replacing Onions.

The opener fatally played back to Stokes’ fifth ball and got an inside edge into his stumps to depart for 22, but James Hildreth kept Kieswetter company until the gloom closed in again.
