Rain hampers Essex and Derbyshire
Essex and Derbyshire’s slender promotion hopes were dealt a blow as rain prevented any play on the opening day of their LV= County Championship clash at Chelmsford.
Early-morning rain was still falling at the scheduled start time of 11am before it relented a little to raise hopes of a delayed start at 1.40pm.
The toss was set back to 1.10pm but then the light deteriorated and the toss was aborted.
Shortly afterwards light rain started to fall once more and, with no improvement in conditions during the afternoon, umpires Nigel Cowley and George Sharp had little option but to abandon play for the day.
Play is set to begin at 11am tomorrow with both sides looking for a win that would keep alive their aspirations of launching a successful late bid for promotion.
