Basement side Glamorgan are without captain David Hemp for their trip to face Essex at Southend in Division Two of the LV County Championship.

Hemp is on international duty with Bermuda in an ICC Twenty20 World Cup qualifier in Belfast. Jamie Dalrymple will lead the Welsh county in his absence.

Veteran spinner Robert Croft returns from a calf strain having missed the previous championship fixture - a 10-wicket defeat to Worcestershire.

Bowlers Adam Shantry and academy graduate Alex Jones have won their first senior team call-up while rookie batsman Tom Maynard joins fellow teenager Jones in the 12-man squad.

Essex are without Alastair Cook and Ryan ten Doeschate, who are both on international duty, plus Neil Dexter who has been recalled by Kent.

Cook is with England for the third npower Test against South Africa at Edgbaston while ten Doeschate has joined up with the Netherlands in Belfast.

Dexter had been on loan since early June but was recalled at short notice to cover for the injured Darren Stevens. Former Zimbabwe international Grant Flower is set to replace Dexter after recovering from a hand injury.

Chris Wright, Maurice Chambers and Tim Phillips will contest ten Doeschate’s place. Chambers is fit following ankle trouble.
