Worcestershire wait another week

Glamorgan's LV County Championship Division Two match against Worcestershire at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff was abandoned as a draw after the fourth day followed the first three when no play was possible.

No rain fell at the ground on the final day but following three inspections the umpires – Barry Dudleston and Steve Garratt – decided the ground was unfit for first-class cricket.

A combination of excess rainfall, frequent downpours and an abnormally high water table combined to make it a farcical four days.

Fortunately an new drainage system is due to be laid this winter before the first npower Ashes Test there next summer.

SWALEC Stadium

The efforts of the SWALEC Stadium groundstaff were futile as the match was abanadoned without a ball bowled

Both sides take four points, meaning Worcestershire will have to wait at least another week to confirm their promotion to Division One.

Worcestershire can celebrate should fourth place Essex, who have a game in hand, fail to win with at least a couple of bonus points against Warwickshire at Chelmsford in the penultimate round of matches.

If Essex do win convincingly next week, Worcestershire can clinch promotion and the Division Two title at in their final championship match of the season against Middlesex at Kidderminster.

Second from bottom Glamorgan, meanwhile, will hope to claw their way up the table in their last two matches against Leicestershire at Cardiff and Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

It is the first time the Cardiff ground has had a four-day match completely washed out but the second time in two years Glamorgan have experienced such frustrations after their clash against Leicestershire at Abergavenny last summer was abandoned without a ball bowled.

Both sides took four points from the contest, increasing Worcestershire’s haul to 191 at the top of the table.
