Michael Klinger took his score to 163 before Gloucestershire were forced to settle for a draw in the rain-ruined LV= County Championship match with Hampshire at Bristol.

Unbeaten on 131 going into the final day, the Australian helped his side achieve maximum batting points before declaring their first innings on 400 for four, a lead of 126, shortly after lunch.

Alex Gidman made 69 but brother Will aggravated an ankle injury when sending down only the second ball of Hampshire's second innings and the visitors survived comfortably enough, closing on 120 for four with Michael Roberts making 44.

Gloucestershire took 11 points from an impressive all-round display, while Hampshire collected six.

After a delay of 35 minutes due to rain, the hosts resumed on 284 for two, with a lead of 10, and were soon looking for quick runs.

Alex Gidman moved to his half-century off 56 balls, with five fours and two sixes, while Klinger reached 150, having faced 241 deliveries and hit 16 fours and two sixes.

Hampshire finally broke a partnership of 109 when Klinger was caught behind driving at James Tomlinson to end an innings spanning five hours and 18 minutes.

That made it 337 for three and 39 more runs were added before Gidman was caught at long-off to give James Vince a wicket.

Lunch was taken at 378 for four and as soon as Will Gidman brought up the 400, Klinger declared with a possible 61 overs left in the day.

Will Gidman had not been expected to bowl after being injured in the first innings, but he opened the attack with dire consequences, pulling up after his second ball and cursing his luck as he made for the pavilion.

With wicketkeeper Cameron Herring suffering from conjunctivitis, Hamish Marshall feeling the effects of a stomach bug and Jack Taylor injured in the warm-up, Gloucestershire had four substitutes on the pitch once Gidman junior departed.

Jimmy Adams fell for the first time in the match, lbw shouldering arms to Benny Howell for 21. But opening partner Roberts played solidly on his championship debut and looked set for a half-century before carelessly lofting Craig Miles to deep square-leg.

Liam Dawson had fallen to Howell for a duck prior to Roberts’ exit, but there was never much cause for Hampshire alarm and a draw had been all but secured by the time George Bailey lifted a Chris Dent full-toss to deep midwicket.

The players duly shook hands at 5:30pm.
