Greg Smith struck 68, but a late collapse saw Leicestershire lose the initiative in their County Championship clash with Hampshire today

Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson’s three late wickets gave Hampshire control against Leicestershire in Division Two of the LV= County Championship.

On a rain-affected first day at the Ageas Bowl, play did not get underway until 2pm and, at the close, the visitors had slumped to 159 for six after losing four wickets for 13 runs.

Former Australia opener Simon Katich - skippering Hampshire in the absence of Jimmy Adams, who missed the match for personal reasons - opted to field, only for Leicestershire to start impressively as the bowlers struggled to cope with a wet ball and soaking outfield.

Matthew Boyce and Greg Smith put on 34 for the first wicket, but the former then gave wicketkeeper Michael Bates a simple catch when chasing a wide delivery.

Jacques du Toit went cheaply, leg before to Hamza Riazuddin, but Smith and Ramnaresh Sarwan - Leicestershire's captain while Matthew Hoggard is injured - rebuilt impressively.

The duo played positively to put on 81, with the former moving past a breezy half-century.

Dawson’s introduction, though, turned the encounter on its head; the tweaker bowled Smith, on 68, before claiming the prized wicket of Sarwan for 46, Sean Ervine taking the slip catch.

Kadeer Ali’s off stump was then knocked back by Chris Wood, after which Dawson - bowling more overs because Hampshire opted to leave out first-choice spinner Danny Briggs - rounded off figures of 3-13 by trapping Nadeem Malik in front.
