Rain and bad light meant only 10 overs were possible on the third day of Hampshire’s LV= County Championship Second Division match with Leicestershire at the Ageas Bowl.

Sean Ervine

Sean Ervine moved from 17 to 41 not out but he was denied the chance to go on after rain meant only 10 overs of play were possible today

Hampshire’s fifth-wicket pair of Michael Carberry and Sean Ervine added a further 36 runs to guide Hampshire to 217 for four - still 17 behind the Leicestershire first-innings total of 234 all out - before more rain called a premature halt.

Carberry, this time batting without the aid of a runner, took his score from 73 to 84 not out and the more aggressive Ervine went from 17 to an unbeaten 41.

The previous day Carberry, recalled to the England Lions squad for the match against West Indies next month, struggled to run because of the effects of cramp and a groin injury.

Leicestershire turned to spinner Kadeer Ali when play started at 3.40pm and pace bowler Nadeem Malik but neither looked like succeeding in overcast conditions and on a wet outfield.

Later Robbie Joseph’s pace was brought into the attack in place of Kadeer, also without hint of a breakthrough.
