Rain washed out the last day of the season-opening fixture at the Ageas Bowl and with it any chance of Hampshire turning their domination of Leicestershire into victory.

Umpires Neil Bainton and George Sharp were left with the simple task of deciding there was no chance of any play in mid-afternoon as ground staff mopped up pools of water forming on the covers and the outfield.

The decision left Leicestershire’s dogged young batsman Ned Eckersley on 99 not out, yet he was unlikely to mind too much.

At 182 for five, still 129 runs in arrears, having been asked to follow on in their second innings, the visitors would have faced an uphill climb to avoid defeat had the inclement weather not intervened.

To add to Hampshire’s frustration, the showers did not arrive until a few minutes before the scheduled 11am start with the players ready to go out.
