Hampshire grabbed their first LV= County Championship win since mid-August, thumping an out-of-sorts Worcestershire by an innings and 42 runs at the Ageas Bowl.

The win, achieved a few minutes before lunch on the final day, lifts Hampshire up among the early-season promotion contenders in Division Two.

Spinner Danny Briggs picked up two wickets today for figures of 3-38 as Hampshire thrashed Worcestershire by an innings and 42 runs

Resuming on 159 for five and faced with the unlikely task of batting out the majority of the day to save the game, Worcestershire made an excellent start but soon subsided.

Captain Daryl Mitchell, not out on 71 overnight, looked in superb nick and closed in on three figures, ably supported by wicketkeeper Michael Johnson.

The pair had batted for an hour and taken their partnership to 69 when Hampshire finally struck, Chris Wood trapping Mitchell lbw for 92 to leave Worcestershire 212 for six.

Johnson departed for 44 just three overs later, also lbw, to a ball which kept low from David Balcombe as Hampshire scented the possibility of an early finish.

Some lusty hitting from new batsman Gareth Andrew delayed the inevitable - he took the unfortunate Wood for four consecutive fours in one over - but the home bowlers remained disciplined and did not have to wait long for another wicket.

Balcombe was the man to strike again, softening up Richard Jones with a short delivery before pitching one up which the tailender obligingly chipped to midwicket.

Andrew departed minutes later for a breezy 28, holing out to Sean Ervine at long-on off Danny Briggs to leave Worcestershire just one wicket from defeat.

That wicket came just as the lunch break loomed, Briggs bowling Chris Russell for a duck to finish with second-innings figures of 3-38.
