Rain rules at Ageas Bowl

Heavy rain and two thunderstorms meant no play was possible on the first day of the LV= County Championship Division Two clash between Hampshire and Yorkshire.

Last year’s two relegated sides, fifth and third respectively in the table, were initially held up by a wet outfield in Southampton.

Hampshire captain Jimmy Adams won the toss and elected to field after naming a four-man seam attack, but almost immediately the heavens opened and forced an early lunch, during which the clattering of thunder was heard around the Ageas Bowl.

Some afternoon sunshine raised hopes that the evening session may go ahead, but, with the umpires due to inspect at 4pm for a start 30 minutes later, thunder rung out once more and another downpour left the ground unplayable for the day.
