Joe Root

Joe Root moved to 46 not out before rain returned at the Ageas Bowl. Only 26 overs were bowled following a complete washout on day one

Hampshire and Yorkshire suffered further frustration at the Ageas Bowl as rain ensured only 26 overs were possible on day two of their LV= County Championship match.

Following yesterday’s washout, play got under way on time this morning and Hampshire initially took advantage of winning the toss by reducing their visitors to 28 for three.

An unbroken partnership of 55 between Joe Root, who reached 46, and Gary Ballance steadied the White Rose, but more showers forced an early lunch and the players were unable to return.

With further precipitation forecast over the next two days, a positive result appears unlikely.

Kabir Ali and James Tomlinson made the most of overcast conditions to trouble Yorkshire’s top order from the outset.

Adam Lyth was the first batsman to depart, trapped in front in Tomlinson’s second over.

Root and stand-in captain Phil Jaques, deputising for the injured Andrew Gale, took the score to 28 before Kabir, getting plenty of assistance from the pitch, had the Australian caught behind by Michael Bates.

England batsman Jonny Bairstow fell to Kabir’s next ball after prodding nervously outside off stump, but Ballance denied the seamer a hat-trick and subsequently rebuilt the innings in the company of Root.

By the premature close, Root had made 46 from 83 balls with six fours including two in succession off Sean Ervine in the last over before lunch.
