Steffan Jones inspired Somerset to their first win in LV County Championship Division One since their return to the top flight with a 20-run victory over Kent.

The 34-year-old seamer produced an outstanding burst of four wickets in 10 balls at Tunbridge Wells as he ran through the tail to dismiss Kent for 250.

Set 271 for their second four-day win of the campaign, Kent opener Joe Denly survived a nervy start to take his side within sight of victory.

Kent moved within 103 of their target with five wickets still intact before Jones had Kent wicketkeeper Geraint Jones (26) caught at second slip, and then bowled left-hander Ryan McLaren (one) four balls later.

In his next over Jones, who finished with 5-63, had Yasir Arafat (one) caught in the slip and two balls later Robbie Joseph was caught at mid-wicket by Peter Trego for a duck.

Opener Denly progressed to a career-best 149 but was the last wicket to fall when he was trapped lbw by South African left-armer Charl Willoughby (4-67) to leave Martin Saggers stranded on nine not out.

In Division One’s other match Surrey batsman Usman Afzaal struck a workmanlike century against Yorkshire before the captains agreed on a draw after uneventful last day.

Afzaal’s second championship hundred of the season for the hosts came from 193 balls with just 10 fours before he was stumped by Gerard Brophy off Adil Rashid for 105.

After Afzaal’s dismissal, there was time for one more over before the match was declared a draw with Surrey leading by 240 runs.

In Division Two, wicketkeeper James Foster spent four hours at the crease to help Essex salvage a remarkable draw against Leicestershire.

Essex, who had been left a target off 445, lost their seventh wicket with the total on 222 and a further 50 overs still remained.

Leicestershire were unable to remove Foster, who finished unbeaten on 88 from 247 deliveries to secure the draw with help from a series of obdurate partners.

David Masters kept out the attack with an 87-ball five but eventually fell lbw to Garnett Kruger while Tony Palladino took two singles off 53 balls before he fell to the same fate to Claude Henderson.

But Foster and last man Danish Kaneria survived the final 21 deliveries of the day to give their side a split of the points.

Northamptonshire crushed Glamorgan, romping to victory by an innings and 99 runs at Swansea.

The hosts required 253 to force Somerset to bat again but David Lucas (3-32) removed three top-order wickets before Johannes van der Wath and Jason Brown picked up two wickets apiece.

Andrew Hall mopped up the tail as Glamorgan were blown away for 154 with Mark Wallace (43), James Harris (46) and Robert Croft (37) the only players to make double figures.

Middlesex veteran Shaun Udal denied Warwickshire a chance of victory on a tense last day at Edgbaston.

After they lost four wickets for 35 in the first 12 overs of their second innings Middlesex were only 77 ahead until the pair staved off defeat.

Udal (66 not out) and Morgan (51no) put on an unbroken 117 to take Middlesex to 335 for seven - a lead of 194 - as the match ended in a draw.
