Keaton Jennings’ composed 70 ensured Durham enjoyed the better of day three in their LV= County Championship Division One clash with Lancashire at Aigburth.

Replying to the home side’s first-innings 262, Paul Collingwood’s side were 187 for four at the close, still 75 in arrears, but the match seemed destined to be drawn.

The visitors can still take encouragement from the performance of Jennings, who faced 128 balls and hit nine fours in an impressive knock.

Graham Onions

Graham Onions claimed his 60th, 61st and 62nd LV= County Championship scalps of the season as Durham enjoyed a good day at Aigburth

At the start of a day reduced to 81 overs due to overnight rain, which meant play did not begin until 1pm, Lancashire lost their last four wickets for 41 runs in 17.1 overs.

Three batsmen, including Tom Smith for 91, were dismissed by Graham Onions, who finished with 6-41, his fifth haul of five or more this season.

Onions has now claimed 62 championship scalps; today he had Smith caught behind and Gary Keedy at third slip either side of bowling Glen Chapple.

However, Kyle Hogg was unbeaten on 60 when the last wicket fell, by which time Lancashire had also collected two valuable batting bonus points.

In reply, Jennings put on 90 with Mark Stoneman, who was then caught at short-leg by Steven Croft off Simon Kerrigan for 44.

Jennings was only seven short of his career-best first-class score when Croft snared another close in, this time off Keedy.

England Lion Ben Stokes attempted to force the pace but had made only four when he drove Keedy straight to Ashwell Prince at short midwicket.

Michael Richardson and Dale Benkenstein’s attempts to guide their side to the close without further loss were foiled by Kerrigan, who bowled the latter five overs before stumps; Richardson remained unbeaten on 39.
