James Anderson had to be patient but ended his first day of cricket this summer with two wickets as Lancashire took control of their LV= County Championship Division Two match with Kent at Emirates Old Trafford.

The England bowler was playing only his fourth game for the county in three seasons and, when Kent won the toss and elected to bat, the overcast conditions looked ideal for him.

However, the 30-year-old had to wait until his 19th over before claiming his first wicket of the day when he bowled Mike Powell for 57.

Anderson added a second just before stumps when Matt Coles pulled to Simon Kerrigan at deep square-leg.

Kent duly closed on 216 for eight, with Anderson returning 2-48 from 23 overs.

Anderson went close to striking several times in the morning session as he beat the bat regularly in a five-over opening spell that yielded just seven runs.

Yet it was Kyle Hogg, who was given the new ball along with Anderson ahead of skipper Glen Chapple, who picked up the first two Kent scalps.

Hogg trapped Sam Northeast lbw with the final ball of the fourth over and, after Rob Key and Brendan Nash saw the visitors safely to lunch on 53 for one, struck again after the interval as the former fell lbw for 31, leaving Kent 60 for two.

Although tight Lancashire bowling meant runs were hard to come by, Nash and Powell frustrated their hosts for most of the afternoon session.

Their 70-run stand was ended when former West Indies Test batsman Nash fell lbw to off-spinner Steven Croft for 50 - his third half-century in as many innings this season.

Kent went on to lose five wickets in the evening, starting with Daniel Bell-Drummond - who was trapped in front by Kerrigan.

Hogg finished with 3-32 as wicketkeeper Gareth Cross pulled off a fine one-handed take to collect an edge from Darren Stevens.

Chapple then knocked Geraint Jones' off stump flying as Kent began to crumble, and Anderson finally got into the wickets with just 11 overs remaining as he saw off the battling Powell before adding the scalp of Coles.
