Lancashire and Surrey were left frustrated as their LV= County Championship Division One match at Aigburth fell victim to bad weather for the second day running.

Both sets of players got out onto the field to warm up just before an early lunch was taken at midday, but rain arrived shortly afterwards to force an abandonment one hour later.

This is Lancs’ eighth washout of a campaign which has seen them relegated and their number of overs lost now totals 1,811.

The county’s hierarchy have been keen to stress that the poor weather this summer has not been to blame for their relegation just a year on from their title success, but there is still plenty of frustration.

Cricket director Mike Watkinson said: “It's cold, it's wet and it's got an end-of-season feel to it.

“On the field, when we've had chance to play, we've not done what we're capable of.

“It's gone from being a remarkable 2011 to a forgettable 2012 for many reasons. We don't know what 2013 will hold in store for us weather-wise, but what it will have is a bunch of very committed cricketers hoping to put one or two things right to get us back on track again.”

Surrey have not escaped the bad weather this season either. In May they saw their match against Durham at the Kia Oval completely washed out without a ball bowled across the four days.
