Tom Smith celebrates removing Sean Ervine, one of his three wickets as Lancashire bowl Hampshire out for just 160 at Aigburth
Kyle Hogg and Tom Smith combined to put Lancashire in command of their LV= County Championship clash with Hampshire.
The seam duo shared seven wickets as Lancashire skittled the visitors for 160, before closing on 124 for two courtesy of Mark Chilton’s unbeaten 47.
After Glen Chapple won the toss and elected to bowl, Hampshire made a commanding start thanks to Michael Carberry, who made 30, and Australian Phil Hughes.
The pair, responding to the early loss of Jimmy Adams, put on 43 for the second wicket before a dramatic period saw the visitors slip from 62 for one to 63 for six.
Carberry was caught behind by Gareth Cross off Hogg, who claimed 4-53, before Neil McKenzie was trapped lbw by the same bowler for a three-ball duck.
Hughes then edged Smith to Horton at first slip in the following over and Sean Ervine departed leg before off the next delivery.
Wicketkeeper Michael Bates completed the handful of wickets when he edged Hogg to Smith at second slip for the third duck of the innings.
James Vince, fresh off the back of a maiden first-class century against Yorkshire last week, tried to fight back, but he succumbed to Smith before Hogg removed James Tomlinson.
But Chris Wood struck 35, sharing crucial eighth- and ninth-wicket stands of 30 and 43 with Dominic Cork and Tomlinson respectively.
In reply, opener Paul Horton was trapped lbw by Cork for an 11-ball duck before Karl Brown, who was dropped on 14 by Hughes in the slips, edged Ervine behind to Bates to leave Lancashire 49 for two at tea.
But Chilton, who hit eight fours, responded well to share an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 75 with West Indies star Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
