The opening day of the LV= County Championship match between Lancashire and Surrey was washed out at Aigburth.

Umpires Michael Gough and Jeremy Lloyds made the decision to call off play shortly before the scheduled lunch interval.

With both sides' fate sealed last week - Lancashire were relegated and Surrey secured their Division One status for 2013 - it is perhaps no surprise that several players have been rested for this fixture.

The Red Rose are without Ashwell Prince, while Surrey have left out Murali Kartik and Kevin Pietersen.

Lancashire will also hand a championship debut to wicketkeeper Alex Davies, an 18-year-old who featured prominently in England Under-19s' recent World Cup campaign in Australia. Regular stumper Gareth Cross is playing second XI cricket this week.
