Mahmood back to lead Lancs pack
Sajid Mahmood will return to bolster Lancashire’s attack for tomorrow’s LV= County Championship fixture against Division One's bottom side Worcestershire at Old Trafford.
While James Anderson and Andrew Flintoff are away on npower Ashes duty, Mahmood has returned to the squad after missing last week’s championship draw at Trent Bridge due to his England Lions’ commitments.
All-rounder Tom Smith has resumed full training after his recent side strain injury and will work hard over the next few days to bring himself into contention for Lancashire’s trip to Edgbaston next week.
Lancashire have not won a championship game since beating Worcestershire at New Road in early May. Since then, they have lost two and drawn two, leaving them sitting fourth in the Division One table.
Meanwhile, Worcestershire's leading wicket-taker Chris Whelan will be rested for the trip to Manchester.
The 23-year-old has featured in all of the four-day games this season, and is due a rest according to the club's director of cricket Steve Rhodes. Gareth Andrew replaces him.
“Chris has done well for us this season, but we felt that he was in need of a rest,” Rhodes said.
“Gareth Andrew will come in after impressing with the seconds. He took four wickets and scored a hundred.
“All the guys in the second team are desperate to do well and break into the first team, so it is pleasing that Gareth has done that.”
Rhodes also said he is confident that Kabir Ali will be fit for the clash, despite carrying minor niggles.
