Mark Ramprakash will have to wait for his big moment after falling for only 17 on the first day of Surrey’s LV County Championship Division One match against Hampshire.

The former England batsman, 38, made his 99th first-class hundred on his last championship outing and is bidding to become only the 25th man to rack up a century of centuries.

But in-form seamer James Tomlinson spoiled the party as Ramprakash edged behind to wicketkeeper Tom Burrows.

Tomlinson claimed 10 wickets in Hampshire’s last championship match at Somerset and added two more here, but it was England hopeful Chris Tremlett who did most of the damage with 5-67 as Surrey were dismissed for 278.

Veteran Mark Butcher top scored for Surrey with 49 while Hampshire closed the day on 13 for one with Michael Carberry (six) the man out.

Twenty wickets fell at Trent Bridge as table-toppers Nottinghamshire took an 89-run first-innings lead against Lancashire.

The early-season pacesetters shrugged off the loss of star bowlers Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad - both of whom are on England duty this week - to dismiss their opponents for a paltry 113.

Darren Pattinson’s 6-30 was the best haul of his fledgling first-class career as only two Lancashire batsmen reached double figures.

The visitors’ humiliation would have been worse had captain Stuart Law not dug in with 55.

His dismissal sparked a collapse that saw Lancashire’s final five wickets fall for the addition of only 12 runs.

But Nottinghamshire also struggled in reply and were bowled out for 202. Samit Patel top scored with 74 while Mark Wagh (55) and Graeme Swann (32) also chipped in with valuable runs.

Lancashire closed an eventful day on four without loss in their second innings.

A superb unbeaten 184 from captain Michael Di Venuto against Yorkshire gave bottom side Durham hope of their first championship victory of the season.

Dale Benkenstein was the next highest scorer with 29 as the hosts reached 337 for six at the Riverside.

Somerset put champions Sussex’s bowlers to the sword with James Hildreth hitting an unbeaten century as the hosts reached 399 for three at Taunton.

Opener Neil Edwards was run out for 99 and former England star Marcus Trescothick racked up 74 before Hildreth took over, notching 127 not out from 161 balls.

In Division Two, Jacques Du Toit made his maiden first-class century as Leicestershire racked up 527 on day two of their match with Northamptonshire.

Resuming on 20 overnight, Du Toit top-scored with 103, while former England wicketkeeper Paul Nixon chipped in with 79 before the home side were eventually dismissed.

Northamptonshire were also among the runs, Ireland opener Niall O'Brien hitting 76 not out in an unbeaten 95-run partnership with Riki Wessels (24 not out) after Stephen Peters was dismissed for 17.

In the other Division Two matches, a 232-run partnership between Chris Taylor (137) and Steve Snell (127no) rescued Gloucestershire from 85 for five at Worcestershire.

Taylor eventually fell when he was caught by Steve Davies off the bowling of Gareth Batty but Mark Hardinges joined in with 66 not out as the visitors closed on 411 for six at New Road.

Glamorgan gained the upper hand in Cardiff as they bowled out visitors Derbyshire for 289 before ending the day on 87 for one.

Former England spinner Robert Croft was the pick of the bowlers with 4-93 while Jonathan Clare was left unbeaten on 70.

In Glamorgan’s reply, opener Gareth Rees reached the close two runs short of a half-century with Matthew Wood the man to fall.
